Summer Gatherings Are About More Than Making Memories, They’re About Saving Them

Summer is the season of backyard barbecues, birthday parties, anniversaries, graduations, reunions, and family vacations. It’s one of the few times each year when multiple generations gather in one place.

While everyone is together, there’s something even more valuable than taking new pictures.

It’s the opportunity to save the stories behind the old ones.

Every family has boxes of photographs, home movies, slides, negatives, VHS tapes, and keepsakes. They’re often scattered among siblings, cousins, aunts, and grandparents. Everyone has a piece of the family puzzle—but very few families ever put it together.

Before another gathering ends, make it a family project.

Your Family History Gathering Guide

As you’re sitting around the table or relaxing after dinner, pull out an old photo album or a handful of loose pictures and start asking questions.

Find Out Who Has What

  • Who has Grandma’s photo albums?

  • Who has Dad’s old camcorder tapes?

  • Does anyone have slides, negatives, or film reels?

  • Who inherited the boxes from previous generations?

  • Are there photos stored in attics, basements, or storage units?

Ask the Questions Only They Can Answer

  • Who is in this picture?

  • Where was it taken?

  • Approximately what year was it?

  • What was happening that day?

  • What do you remember most?

  • Who took the photo?

  • Are there other photos from this event?

Record the Stories

Use your phone to record conversations while people talk. A two-minute story today becomes an irreplaceable treasure for your children and grandchildren.

Label Everything

Write names, dates, and places on sticky notes or create a shared document while everyone remembers.

Make a Family Plan

Decide who will gather everything together and who will organize it for preservation.

Don’t Wait

Every family says the same thing after someone passes away:

“I wish I’d asked more questions.”

Once those stories are gone, they’re gone forever.

The photos may survive.

The names may not.

The stories almost never do.

September Is Save Your Photos Month

That’s why summer is the perfect time to gather the memories—and September is the perfect time to preserve them.

After you’ve identified the people, collected the albums, and recorded the stories, it’s time to protect everything for future generations by digitizing photos, videos, slides, film, and audio before time causes more damage.

At Preserving Memories, LLC, we help families preserve their history so it can be shared for generations to come.

This summer, don’t just make new memories.

Save the old ones while the people who remember them are still here.
