Scanning & Digitizing

Why Camera Scanning Produces Better Results Than Any National Scanning Company

When you choose Preserving Memories, LLC, you’re not handing your irreplaceable photos and videos over to a giant national corporation. You’re trusting a certified professional in New Hampshire who personally handles every item, understands your project, and treats your family history with care. Our photo and video digitizing services are designed for customers who want archival-quality results, personalized service, and complete peace of mind.

Unlike big-box or mail-away scanning services, we never outsource your photos, and we never run them through outdated or high-risk equipment. Everything is digitized in-house using state-of-the-art camera scanning systems, which are considered the gold standard in the photo preservation industry.

What Makes Our Scanning Better?

Advanced Camera Scanning – The Highest Quality Available Today

Most national digitizing companies still rely on flatbed scanners or high-speed auto-feed scanners. These machines are fast, but they sacrifice quality and put your photos at risk.

Our camera scanning system offers:

  • Exceptional sharpness and clarity

  • Accurate color reproduction

  • Minimal light exposure

  • Archival-level digital files

  • The ability to digitize items of any size or thickness

  • Safe, gentle handling for fragile or historic photographs

Camera scanning captures your image with a high-resolution professional camera and specialized lighting, producing results that far exceed anything a traditional scanner can deliver. This is the same method used by museums, archives, and professional conservators.

We Can Digitize Items Other Services Cannot

From Tiny Prints to Large Artwork, Oversized Memorabilia & 3D Objects

Because our setup is completely versatile, we can digitize items that auto-feed scanners simply can’t handle. This includes:

  • Oversized prints and panoramas

  • Framed photos (no need to risk removing them)

  • Scrapbooks and photo albums

  • Bound books without damaging the spine

  • Newspapers and clippings

  • Artwork—large and small

  • Delicate, curled, or damaged photographs

  • 3D memorabilia and keepsakes

If it’s important to you, we can digitize it safely.

Why We Refuse to Use Auto-Feed Scanners

Fast Does Not Mean Safe

Auto-feed scanners are the go-to tool for large national digitizing companies because they allow thousands of photos to be pushed through at high speed. But that comes with serious risks.

Auto-feed scanners:

  • Only accept photos sized 2x2 through 8x10

  • Cannot handle torn, taped, glued, or fragile images

  • Often produce dull, inaccurate colors

  • Can create streaks, roller marks, or digital banding

  • Can jam and physically damage irreplaceable originals

If you have old family photos, vintage prints, or anything sentimental, an auto-feed scanner is the worst option. That’s why we will never use them.

We will:

  • Gently clean and hand scan each photo, negative or slide individually prior to scanning to remove dust, debris and fingerprints.

  • Scan using a method called Camera Scanning.   We use a either our 24 or 48 megapixel cameras for archival quality scans, the same method used by the National Archives Museum, adhering to FADGI (Federal Agency Digital Guidelines Initiatives) standards. This yields higher resolution, truer/sharper colors and no streaks. Option to have Raw/ TIFF images at no additional cost. It also greatly reduces the chance of damage to already fragile photos and albums.

  • Color correct and spot touch up damaged photos. Restoration services are available for damaged/discolored photos. See Photo Restoration for more information.

  • Digital file saved on USB Flash, DVD or External Hard drive

Auto fed photo vs Camera Scanned. No editing has been done to either photo. Photos with dark colors have the most dramatic differences. If you are going to invest your money to have your items digitized, don't you want the best quality scan you can get?

An example of a discolored slide. We color corrected to bring back original colors and spot touched up dirt and debris that was permanently etched into the slide.
Use the slider to see the before and after.

Have you ever noticed old photos having a silver sheen to them? Old photos used to be printed on a layer of silver. Improper storage, heat, fingerprints etc can break down the emulsion and expose the silver, especially around dark areas of the print. The decay is irreversible. Traditional scanning will only exacerbate the silver sheen.

The fix? We camera scan all photos for optimum results and in this case we also use a method called cross polarization to eliminate the sheen and bring out the true original colors.
